Mercurey 1er Cru Les Grand Voyens 2021 offers loads of blackberry and blueberry flavours, but subtly reined in by a master craftsman vigneron! It is direct but full and rich with a lovely backbone of acidity, and delightfully balanced.
Mercurey is in the Cote Chalonnaise area of Burgundy and is now producing pretty decent wines, regularly offering better value than its better known northern village communes. As climate change continues it's evil dance, this region will offer more and more!
The Grand Voyens 1er Cru has two 'sisters' - same village, all 1er Cru, same producer but we picked this one of the three because it was more compact and had lots of fruit. It will keep of course, but drinking so well now with more delicate dishes and blue cheese.
SORRY! Only 3 Btls left of 2021 Vintage. Next vintage en route shortly
More details:
Benoit Eschard took over this estate from his Uncle in 2011, although the estate was created in 1858. There are 7ha of 1er Cru vineyards, including 5ha of Clos des Grand Voyens, which is a Monopole (controlled totally by this estate).
Benoit has 2 other 1er Cru Mercurey in his domaine. It is no exaggeration to say that while they are beside each other, they are very different (although they are all treated the same during vinification, cellaring etc). The other 2 Mercurey 1er Cru, Clos d'éveque and Les Nauges are a similar price. If interested, email us at info@webwines.ie and we'll confirm availability.
