Wine of The week, Irish Times, May 2025 no less!!
Percheron Chenin Viognier offers up a lovely bright colour in the glass and a smashing fruity (but really clean) nose - pears and nectarines !
In the mouth it's medium bodied, with fresh fruits that glide over the palate. It finishes quite crisply (the acidity from the Chenin me thinks) but leaves layers of fruit behind. A lovely wine at a great price!
This slightly off-dry fruity style of wine works really well with food.
Irish Times says 'Tasty textured plump peaches and nectarines with a tangy finish. Try this with richer seafood dishes, creamy chicken or vegetable gratins'
Chenin Blanc originates in Loire Valley, France and makes great Dry wines (Anjou & Vouvray), fruitier wines (more typically Vouvray) and excellent Dessert wines (Coteaux de Layon, Chaume etc)
In South Africa, Chenin Blanc is normally called Steen and is mostly dry with crisp acidity (a feature of Chenin Blanc).
Viognier is the famous (and very expensive) star of the Northern Rhone - think Condrieu (think expensive!) or even Cote Rotie , a red wine made in some cases with up to 10% Viognier. Viognier is a delicate varietal that must be treated with care.
