Why is the Sociando Mallet estate not listed in the 1855 Classification? I mean, it nearly always scores in the low to mid 90's with the critics? Well, the answer is that the Vineyard was practically nonexistent until 1969 when Jean Gautreau purchased 5 hectares of neglected vines, no barrel cellar etc! You can read the history (modern!) of Sociando Mallet on their website HERE.
This wine, La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2016 is the 2nd wine of Chateau Sociando Mallet, made from 50% Cab. Sauvignon and 50% Merlot. It's made from the grapes of younger vines and the better Merlot sites. While subject to same care and devotion as the 1st Wine, it is lighter in style and can be drunk relatively young (unlike it's big brother!). To clarify - it's not a light wine, just lighter than the block-buster First wine.
La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2016 has a deep and intense red colour with purple reflections. On the nose, it displays complex aromas of black fruits such as black cherry and blackberry. If paying attention, you will detect subtle notes of blackcurrant, raspberry, and a subtle hint of sweet spices. The aromas are elegant and harmonious, with a discreet touch of oak from the barrel aging.
On the palate, it has generous and velvety texture. The tannins are present but silky, providing a pleasant structure to the wine. The flavours of black fruits are confirmed on the palate, with a well-balanced fruity intensity complemented by lively acidity. There are also slightly spicy and woody notes that add complexity to the wine. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a refreshing and controlled sense of power on the palate.
The 2016 vintage is considered one of the property's great successes, offering a combination of power and elegance typical of Bordeaux wines.

Tight and linear with berry and citrus character, a medium body and a clean finish. A little lean at this point but should fill out in the barrel. Pretty second wine from Sociando. 90-91/100 (Outstanding)

Nose of black fruits, blackberry, suave mouth, very Merlot, structured mouth, full, very round, spicy on the finish 15/20 (my dodgy translation!)

Black fruits are joined by a cooling freshness. This isn't quite up to the standard of the legendary 2010, where even the second wine was unmissable, but it's good value with some lovely crunchy fruit. A smart buy. 87/100
