Solo Roberto Merlot DOC Friuli Grave, Italy

Solo Roberto Merlot gives us what we were hoping for - a fresh, fruity, balanced Merlot that is for drinking now! Better still it's only 12.5% Alc Vol!

It shows an intense ruby red colour in the glass. On the nose, you'll get fresh clean aromas of underground red fruit, tobacco and cocoa. It is soft, balanced with velvety tannins and finishes soft and clean.

'Sage-leaf fragrance ushers in a juicy but graceful and slightly unusual Merlot. It feels incredibly neat, as if the tannins were topiary, prim-trimmed to fit the red-plum-skin, cooked-red-cherry fruit to a perfect but gentle edge. There is a touch of green pepper, sweetening the sage; a touch of pomegranate pith; a sweet barbecue-like smokiness. And then a sort of stone-shell salinity that almost tastes like oyster liquor and made me think of rock pools. So unusual, and beautifully balanced at just 12.5% alcohol. Bravo!'

Made on gravelly (yes, same as Graves in Bordeaux!) soils in the North East of Italy (heading for Slovenia & Austria), these wines are so fresh and enjoyable, without any effort!
